ABOUT QUEER FILM THEORY 101

Queer Film Theory 101 at Alamo Drafthouse takes an in-depth look at the queerest “straight” films ever produced. We’re outing all of your favorite films! Is TITANIC a gender queer love story? Does POINT BREAK explore the latent homosexuality in sports culture? Yes yes, and we’ll tell you why. To this day there are so few representations of LGBTQ+ people in film, so we improvise, we read between the lines, we make adjustments to our head cannon, and zero in on all the queer subtext available. Join us every month for a new entry in our screening and lecture series.

ABOUT UNDER THE SKIN

One of the most stark, strange, devastating and unique cinematic objects of the past decade, UNDER THE SKIN is an outré high water mark for both Scarlett Johansson and elusive filmmaker Jonathan Glazer (who’d already rocked us with Aughties masterworks SEXY BEAST and BIRTH.) As an unforgettable batch of alien audio sculpture by Mica Levi (of Micachu and the Shapes) seethes in the background, Glazer narcotically glitches between Johansson as an existential E.T. combing Scottish highways in search of seducible forsaken men, and a series of chilling, hyper-colored abstractions in the mold of Kubrick and music video auteur Chris Cunningham. Whatever you think of UNDER THE SKIN, you’ll leave the theater armed with at least one dozen indelible images you’ll never shake.
